Shoots with children
Family shoots don’t need to be serious! Autumn family photography session in Peak District
We’re parents of three boys so we get it! Children, especially younger ones, can sometimes find photoshoots overwhelming, after all it’s a stranger following you around and pointing a camera at you. Like most parents, we’ve learnt that the best laid plans don’t always work out and my advice for anyone doing a shoot with children is don’t get fixated on images you’ve already seen and over think your family photography session. Children (not always and not all) can do the very opposite of what you want but with just the right preparation, it can be stress free and most of all fun for everyone.
Being parents ourselves we will always do our best to work around you and what suits you as a family. You know your children better than anyone but these are our tips to consider beforehand which I hope will help.
Exploring on a family photography session allows children to settle in and burn off some energy.
Casually talk about the shoot beforehand
Children are much more likely to feel comfortable if they feel prepared or know what to expect. In the days leading up to the session, explain what you’ll be doing and how it’s going to be fun! Talk about the location. As our shoots take place outdoors talk about how they’ll get to play and be themselves. It can also help to show them examples of other family photos, especially ones with children having a good time.
Comfortable clothes
While coordinating outfits might be on your mind, it’s important to prioritise comfort and being practical for the occasion. Aim for outfits that allow them to move freely and feel like themselves. Dress for the season, being cold or wet won’t make it enjoyable.
Schedule in shoots around their best times
If possible, plan the photoshoot at a time when your children are well rested and in a good mood. We’ll always try to avoid times close to their usual nap time or when they’re likely to be hungry. Early mornings or late afternoons are often good times for natural lighting and can coincide with when children are feeling more refreshed.

Make it a game and join in
During the shoot, Jon will work his best charm to turn the experience into a game. Encouraging your children to do all the things they’d normally do whilst out and about. This helps keep the energy light and fun. Jon will always try to gain their trust first and let them settle into the photography session before asking them to do anything.
We’ll get what you want amongst the chaos
Children can be unpredictable, and that’s okay. If they don’t want to pose perfectly or sit still, don’t worry! Some of the best photos can come from moments of spontaneity. If you’re calm, patient, and encourage play, your children will feed off that energy. Embrace the leaf throwing, jumping, cartwheeling and stick collecting and this is when they’ll be relaxed and Jon will always capture get the shots he needs.
